You may well be correct in the short term, as history has shown us that pain and suffering are a far greater motivator than mollycoddling, ie, scientific progress in WW1 and WW2 is exponentially better than the decades preceding it; however, when it comes to the long term, it's a toss-up and can land either way. I suppose the best way to look at this and everything else in tow is just to do our best and hope things don't go sideways too much before we self correct, which has always been the case so far.
