Meanwhile, on the other side lurk the Cassandras, those darkly prophetic souls who see AI not as a boon but as an existential threat, ready to plunge us into chaos and ruin at the slightest misstep.
As the world hurtles forward, the clash between these two factions will only grow more pronounced. Will AI elevate us to new heights or lead us to our doom? POLLYANNAS

Yuval Noah Harari, too, has jumped aboard this shiny optimism express, penning his thoughts in Homo Deus, where he suggests that our trajectory is towards a god-like existence, rendered possible through the miraculous advancements of AI. The Pollyannas don’t just stop at the theoretical; they are all about practical applications. In scientific research, AI is their star player, leading the charge in climate modelling—crafting predictions that promise to tackle climate change with the finesse of a seasoned fortune teller. At CERN, the particle physics playground, AI sifts through massive data sets from colliders, searching for the holy grail of scientific discovery. “It’s just a matter of time,” they chirp, convinced that AI will soon transform from a tool to the ultimate answer to our myriad dilemmas.
In their fevered imaginations, AI is the key to Nirvana, the golden ticket to Utopia, where humans live in a blissful state, free from worry, with AI working tirelessly in the background to eradicate our woes. Picture it: a world where your AI assistant schedules your appointments and manages your existential crises.
Of course, healthcare is where the Pollyannas believe AI will truly shine. They wax lyrical about Early Disease Detection, where AI can sniff out diseases like cancer before they can settle in and throw a party. Then there’s Drug Discovery, which they claim will speed up the hunt for new treatments as if searching for a missing sock. Personalised Medicine? That’s the cherry on top—tailoring treatments to fit an individual’s genetic makeup like a bespoke suit. Dr. Eric Topol, a well-respected cardiologist and self-styled oracle of digital medicine, proclaims, “AI can bring back the human touch in healthcare, giving doctors more time to connect with their patients.” One can only hope that when the AI revolution unfolds, it doesn’t just connect us with our doctors but also remembers our birthdays!
CASSANDRAS

As AI technologies begin automating manual labour and white-collar positions, they envision a dystopian landscape where massive unemployment becomes the new normal. "Retrain? Good luck with that," they scoff, convinced that the workforce won’t adapt fast enough to keep pace with this seismic shift. In their view, the spoils of AI will be hoarded by a select cadre of tech oligarchs, widening the chasm between the wealthy elite and the struggling masses. According to a 2020 report by the World Economic Forum, by 2025, a staggering 85 million jobs could vanish into the ether thanks to automation.
The Cassandras also paint a grim picture of opportunistic individuals wielding AI like a powerful weapon, maximising profits while minimizing workforce and liabilities. Picture corporations—those modern-day behemoths, the lifeblood of economies in places like South Korea, with its Chaebols, and Japan, with its Keiretsus—flipping the switch on automation. If these giants let AI take over, millions could find themselves jobless overnight, left to navigate the cruel job market like castaways on a deserted island.
And let’s not overlook privacy and surveillance—two words that send shivers down the spines of even the most steadfast optimists. With AI-powered tools like facial recognition and behavioural analysis lurking in the shadows, the Cassandras fear we are inching closer to a world of Orwellian proportions, where our every move is tracked and analyzed. The troves of personal data necessary for training these AI systems are at risk of being hacked or misused, leading to a future that resembles a techno-paranoia thriller. Edward Snowden, the whistleblower who exposed the NSA's overreach, has warned that “AI-powered mass surveillance is not a dystopian future, but a present reality.” If the NSA could invade our privacy a decade ago, one can only shudder to think what they’re capable of now, armed with even more advanced tools.

Jacques Ellul provides an excellent analysis and commonly usable understanding of Technological bluff. AI is a perfect example of that. A self fulfilling hoax, whereby millions of people are convinced that quantitative data provides a coherent model of the world and that the efficiency of data-driven systems can provide us with the right solutions (transformation). That is a hoax. The sheer volume of information available to us today reveals less than we hoped for. Rather, the super abundance of data points to a new Dark Age: a world of ever-increasing incomprehension and even further loss of control.
